Technical Terms
_____________________________________________
Definitions of the forum and Roleplaying terms- let us know if there are more terms that could be included!
_____________________________________________
Roleplay:
'To act as a character, in a fantasy,'
______________________________________
Avatar:
'An embodiment or manifestation, as of a quality or concept.'
______________________________________
Original Character:
Also called an Avatar, an original character, or OC; a character designed by a person for use in creative story-writing.
An Original Character can only be used by their original creator unless sold, traded, gifted, or given to a new owner.
It is important to be aware of your own leniency when it comes to characters design and claiming it unique to yourself.
i.e. There are many, many hundreds of 'wolf' original characters out there, and often they share similar characteristics, like being all white or all black. Find not only what makes your character unique to themselves, but be welcoming to other 'wolf' characters as well!
______________________________________
First-Person writing:
First person writing puts the writer in the shoes of the character, and in the present tense, such as 'I drink the cold water and let out a sigh,' and 'I pick up the first book on the desk, looking over the pages carefully'.
One of the most common forms of short-hand, fast-paced roleplay often used in chat-rooms and instant messaging, but you can use it here too!
______________________________________
Second-Person:
Second person writing brings the audience into the writing; this is most often used by speakers, teachers, and others speaking to an audience, such as 'You're looking around, and spy a diamond. It's odd, you think, to find such a valuable item here.'
This isn't used for roleplay, saved for if you're holding contests, or are addressing a group of people.
______________________________________
Third-Person writing:
Third person writing often puts the character in past-tense and as their own entity, such as 'Michael drank from the cup before setting it down again as his mind wandered back to yesterday.' or 'Sherri had walked this path before, and she would choose to walk it again.,'
This the most common form of slower-paced roleplay within forums, often accompanied with large bodies of text and description!
______________________________________
In-Character:
To be in-character, or IC, means you're writing, acting, and otherwise interacting with the given setting, as your character/Avatar!
______________________________________
Out-of-Character:
To be out-of-character, or OOC, means you're writing, interacting, and otherwise doing things, as yourself!
There are no roleplay scenarios written in OOC categories; these boards are generally for chatting with other players, writing out notes, making polls and babble boards, and playing random forum games.
______________________________________
Forum:
A place wherein people communicate.
The whole of 'kokoata.freeforums.net' is a forum!!
______________________________________
Category:
A section of the Forum: 'The Hub', 'Active Headspace', '[Gallan] Kingdom of sword, wealth, & worldly treasure' are all categories!
______________________________________
Board:
A sub-section within a Category: 'News & Updates', 'Forum Guide', 'Rambunctious Rabble', NORTHLIGHT MOUNTAINS and [Grand-City Thera], are all boards!
______________________________________
Thread:
A sub-sub section, within a Board: 'Discord [info]', 'Check-in [info]', 'Roleplay Technicalities [FAQ]', Grand City Thera [info] are threads!
Threads are what you create! They can be created nearly anywhere within the forum, and titles can be anything you like (Kept PG-13 please!) The topic of what you're writing, is dictated by the Board you're in...
A thread created within Rambunctious Rabble can have its topic be anything you want, and writ as you like!
A thread created within Grand City Thera, should follow the given Roleplay Guidelines; Writing Basics, have some writing which reflects the setting in the Grand City Thera [info] thread, and be written using your Avatars' perspective!
